The Yellow Freight (Yellow) system is the largest less-than-truckload shipping company in the United States and a leader in the trucking industry. The company operates more than 550 terminal locations throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In trucking, a critical issue affecting profitability is maintenance and repair of equipment.

More than two years ago, Yellow implemented a comprehensive maintenance control and management system to keep equipment on the road and making money. It worked beautifully—except that the daily updates and batch processing required for the application meant extending daily application downtime for up to 45 minutes.

During this time, employees in more than 28 maintenance shops were prevented from accessing the system to enter and issue repairs, check out parts, or add to the inventory. This system unavailability resulted in lost productivity.

When Yellow Technology Services (Yellow) data center installed SYSB-II, the VSAM file-sharing solution from H&W, it was able to run its daily report processing and file updating with the mainframe up and running. SYSB-II has allowed Yellow Freight to recapture employee productivity and effectiveness.

Yellow data-center employees revealed that a previous VSAM file tool had not been consistently reliable in Yellow's environment. They haven't experienced that problem with the SYSB-II technology.

Yellow has extended its use of SYSB-II to other applications with similar success. Programs that provide additional client services were previously held up because of system unavailability. No more. Since installing SYSB-II, plans are underway to extend the applications from the marketing department to field sales people, a move that would not be possible if system availability had not improved.

The bottom line? Access to data is one of the chief assets of any company. Magnify that access and productivity flourishes. Without adequate access to data, little good is realized from it.

Let H&W give your employees and customers access to your information. You'll find your company can grow and profit.
